Awful Auditions

4 October 2023

Something actors may not realise is just how nervous producers can get about casting the next show. There’s a tendency to think of directors and producers sitting in judgment on the actors they are seeing in auditions. But the reality is the producer has a problem, which he/she is hoping will be solved by the next person who comes through the door. This is never more apparent than when the part they are casting is pivotal to the success of the play. So an actor who enters the room with the aim of solving the director’s problem has a very strong chance of success. I’ve always remembered the actors who did so much work on the part they were essentially saying “There’s no need to look any further – I’m the actor you need”. That is the attitude every actor needs when he/she enters the room: do the necessary work and go in to get the part.
