ARTHUR MILLER

18 March 2021

I'm watching a documentary on THE MISFITS and I'm reminded that in 1995 we produced THE CRUCIBLE. It was only three years into our existence and we were somehow producing a show with nineteen actors without any funding. Fortunately, everything in those early days played to about 97% capacity, so we just about broke even. The show went on a three-week tour, during which four of us were invited to attend a theatrical celebration of Arthur Miller’s 80th birthday, which was being held at Norwich Theatre Royal. We were the only company producing his plays that autumn which is why we were invited to meet the great man and hear him talk about theatre. But because I wasn’t feeling well, and decided I owed a professional duty to look after myself in the middle of the tour, I didn’t go. There are some decisions you make in your twenties which remain unfathomable for the rest of your life!
